Duane Hanson, Pop Artist and Ultra Realism Sculptor - Part of His Process Explained
Duane Hanson was a pop art sculptor, famous for his ultra-realistic sculptures of people in various ordinary activities. Some examples of the activities include shopping, cleaning, watching television, etc.
The process innovated by Duane Hanson usually utilized bronze sculptures or polyester resin, though he has used other materials as well. He would make casts from models for the various pieces of his sculptures, and he would then put them together, after which he would paint them by hand. In many of his sculptures, a different model would be used for different parts of the body.
Part of his process involved testing color combinations for the painted areas. In order to do this, Duane Hanson would create several 'test heads' upon which he would use different paint and color combinations to determine the most realistic and life-like combination, or perhaps simply the one he liked the best. Once he had created the perfect color combination, it would be used on the final piece.
One such test head is available on the website d-vers.com. It was a test head or sketch head created by Duane Hanson for the final piece titled "Fund Raiser." It was auspicious that this particular piece was given by the artist to a friend, as it might otherwise have been destroyed. The test head listed on d-vers.com is a very rare find.
In addition to being very rare in and of itself, this test head is the only sculpture by Duane Hanson currently available for sale. Most of Duane Hanson's pieces are on exhibit at museums around the world, or held in private collections. Collectors of Pop Art, and of art by Duane Hanson in particular, are quite fortunate to have this sketch head by Duane Hanson available to own.
Many other interesting pieces are listed on the website at d-vers.com, and new items are added often.
